The objective of this project was to create a book investigating a social or cultural phenomena. For my topic, I choose the 1992 Los Angeles Riots because of its significance to the place and culture I grew up in. The L.A. Riots took place 7 years after I was born, as a child I had no memory of the riots and had only heard stories or seen media footage of what had occurred. What I saw though had deeply disturbed me, and motivated me to investigate the underlying factors that caused this event (which included racism, poverty, media influence, L.A.P.D. corruption, etc). My goal is to integrate this book with an accompanying web platform to serve as an educational resource for Los Angeles high school students.
The book is comprised of unbound stapled signatures. Black lines throughout symbolize divisions. The images are cropped erratically and the typographic elements are brutally slammed together in relation to its neighboring elements to create a feeling of tension.
