Werkplaats Typografie
November 22nd, 2009 Yanda

The Werkplaats Typografie (WT) was founded in 1998 by Wigger Bierma and Karel Martens. Its curricula is based on practical assignments and self-initiated projects, also serving as a meeting place for graphic designers with regard to research and dialogue. Some of its participants had no formal design background, and some who did questioned the basic fundamentals of accepted design practice. Many are regarded as influential, problematic, unclassifiable figures in the field today. It is located in a small building in Arnhem, NL, which is also home to the bridge in A Bridge Too Far (1977). The WT is supervised by Martens, Armand Mevis, and tutors Paul Elliman and Maxine Kopsa. It started as, and remains, a curious and wondrous place.
